Can we all just agree on this one thing? Caddyshack was probably the best movie ever.

Ok, maybe let’s not get carried away. But seriously, it was a darn funny movie. You have seen it right? Caddyshack came out in 1980 as an American sports comedy film directed by Harold Ramis. It stars Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, and Bill Murray.

Many say it is one of the funniest sports movies of all time.

Caddyshack was an exclusive country club for WASP-ish snobs where an ambitious young golf caddy named Danny from an over populated home eagerly pursues a caddy scholarship so he can attend college and avoid a job at the lumber yard. Yet in order to succeed he must first win the favor of elitist Judge Smails then try to win the caddy golf tournament which Judge Smails sponsors. There are a bunch of slapstick storylines along the way involving obnoxious nouveau riche land developer Al Czervik who wants to turn the site into a condominium community. There is Zen-quoting and millionaire slacker/golf ace Ty Webb who owns a lumber yard or two and the psychotic groundskeeper Carl Spackler who is tasked with dealing with the gopher investation.

The best character in Caddyshack is definitely Carl Spackler who is played by Bill Murray. He even has his own website. There are countless jokes and quotes in Caddyshack that have turned the film into a sort of cult classic with most of them being attributed to Carl Spackler.

“License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill you must know your enemy, and in this case, my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will not quit, ever.”

Carl Spackler always makes me smile.

“What an incredible Cinderella story! This unknown, comes out of nowhere, to lead the pack at Augusta. He’s at the final hole. He’s about 455 yards away, he’s gonna hit about a 2-iron, I think. Oh, he got all of that. The crowd is standing on its feet here at Augusta. The normally reserved crowd is going wild… for this young Cinderella who’s come out of nowhere. He’s got about 350 yards left, he’s going to hit about a 5-iron, it looks like, don’t you think? He’s got a beautiful backswing… that’s- oh, he got all of that one! He’s gotta be pleased with that! The crowd is just on its feet here. He’s a Cinderella boy. Tears in his eyes, I guess, as he lines up this last shot. He’s got about 195 yards left, and he’s got a, looks like he’s got about an 8-iron. This crowd has gone deadly silent… Cinderella story, out of nowhere, former greenskeeper, now about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac- it’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!

Judge Smails: You’ll get nothing, and like it!

I use the “you’ll get nothing, and like it!” line all the time, and variations of it: “what should i get? I can’t decide?” me: “How about nothing? It’s pretty good, doesn’t upset your stomach and no calories or fat!”

Awesome project Troy, it will be amazing if you stick this out for 1,000 posts. A very respectable endeavor, good luck man!

  2. There were a few lines in that movie I did not understand for the longest time.
“I like to go to bull fights on acid.” I thought they meant the corrosive not a drug.
“Come upstairs and help me sort my holy cards.” I could not understand her accent / did not know what holy cards are. I thought she meant christmas cards.
