#952 Air conditioning helps keeps things cool and smiley.

It is getting to be that time of the year again. Spring is on its way out and summer is right around the corner. That means no more leaving the windows open and time to start using the air conditioning.

This past weekend Brenna and I headed over to Boulder City to check out their Spring Jamboree. While there we wandered up and down the aisles of classic cars when we happened upon this:

air conditioning old car

“What is that?” she asked. I would have had no idea except my ’63 Studebaker Lark had no air conditioning system so in my research I learned…

“That is the air conditioning. The air comes though the front and gets swirled around and shoved though that gap in the window and into the car” I explained.

“Oh thank goodness for air conditioning. You should do a 1KSmiles post on air conditioning.”

Brenna is so clever.

Yet really, what much can you say about air conditioning other than it is nice to have but terrible for our respiratory systems. When you don’t have it and it is hot outside there is nothing better really? I remember my step dad use to design large commercial refrigeration units for places like Dodger Stadium and Disneyland. In his world the question similar to the chicken and egg is “Are you adding cold air or taking hot air away when you cool a room?” I am sure there is a scientific explanation that someone like Neil deGrasse Tyson could answer for us but really does it matter? Not to me on a hot summer day. All I need to know is that it works.

My favorite poet, Fish, said, “We have air conditioning in Scotland. It’s called opening the windows.”

I have lived in all sorts of places. When I lived in the Middle East we had those wall mounted units like this:

air conditioning red wall

But in my two story house in Las Vegas I had to have not one but two of those big units up on the roof. (Right in the hot desert sun. Good job there Mr. Architect) but now we are in the one story Art House and have this:

air conditioning unit

and it does the job perfectly. And it better as 120*F is coming soon.

I remember growing up at 1516 E 76th Place in Los Angeles and we did not have air conditioning. I remember there was a portable swamp cooler in the living room. Oh it smelled so good to me back then and I still love the smell to this day.

So when you fire up your air conditioning thank the ancient Egyptians for the idea where reeds were hung in windows and were moistened with trickling water. The evaporation of water cooled the air blowing through the window which also made the air more humid. (Good thing is a desert.) Or in Ancient Rome where water from aqueducts was circulated through the walls of certain houses to cool them. Later the first large-scale electrical air conditioning was invented and used in 1902 by Willis Carrier with the introduction of residential air conditioning in the 1920s.

Whatever type of air conditioning you have be happy you do.

Oh, and if you ever get a chance, do visit Boulder City. The place is pretty cool.

    • I used to have a 64 Studebaker with no air conditioning. Made the car sort of unbearable in the Las Vegas summers. One of these was the only option really other than just not driving the car half the year.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment. It made me smile. 🙂

  1. I have a portable air conditioner on my house which is very convenient since it is movable and I can choose where and what room should be cooled.

    • Yep, I think all good companies and the results they produce depend on good management / leadership. Even if you have the best workers / team available if they are not treated / led well, they will fail. Who needs that? Not cool. 🙂

  2. Having air conditioning in both your home and your car really helps make life a lot more enjoyable. It is so miserable to be hot in your own house over the summer. I am really hoping that I will be able to have my air conditioner fixed soon. It broke down last summer and we haven’t gotten it fixed since. It would be really nice to come back to a good cool home this summer.

  3. that unit on the side of the car is really something! I wonder how tough the glazing work has to be in order to hold that on the window. must be really tough glass work haha. That can be called air conditioning on the go. cos you can only get the air conditioning when the car is go-ing forward. haha. really neat. Scotland has the best air conditioning perhaps

  5. Amazing blog post, I haven’t seen anything like that. Troy, well done buddy, you came up with great idea. I have evaporative air conditioning at my home which is environment friendly and affordable solution for me. And, moreover my family is big, joined family and evaporative AC work well for larger space. But, your solution is the unique one which is applicable outside and inside as well. Thanks buddy!!!

  6. I think the comment by someone from Scotland is true. Air conditioning in the UK is not particularly common at all – it never gets that hot.

I do think the add on unit to the ’63 Studebaker Lark at the start of the post is a bit over the top. They could have just wound the window down surely?

And air-conditioner is the best thing ever for everyone to escape from the heat. In summer, when we have to park the car outside, it’s too hot to get in. Thanks god! We have air-conditioner. Thanks for your post to make air-conditioner become more popular.

Currently sitting in my office and it’s very hot and stuffy in here so office air conditioning is definitely on our wish list and something I’ll be researching more and more in the coming week, seen as it’s Summer time here in the UK (we can barely stand 23 degrees celsius.. laughable to some, I know…)

  22. It’s funny the effect of temperature on the human body, and spirit. I traveled through Morocco recently through the height of summer, it was debilitating. This heat was so blisteringly hot, an egg wouldn’t have fried on a car bonnet – it would have evaporated. I have never appreciated an air conditioned room so much in my life.
